The Return

ocean waves at Oak Island
There are lots of things I miss about being on vacation. This view from a lounge chair in the sand is one of them. I also miss early morning coffee with my whole family at the kitchen table with a pile of waffles.

I’m missing the fact that no one thinks twice when there’s more vodka than juice in your cup at 11 am or that beer is totally acceptable well before noon. Vacation tip of the week: Buy THESE. You’ll thank me later.

Junk food was an integral part of our 8 day hiatus in Oak Island, North Carolina. This included Doritoes piled with leftover chicken & rice, root beer floats at any hour of the day, homemade pizzas, tacos, brownie sundaes and s’mores.

OH. The S’mores.

I learned something new about my sweetheart while vacationing… he had never before in his life eaten a s’more. What the what?!

We very quickly remedied that problem. I have pictures, but I think he would not speak to me for a week if I posted them. So I’ll just leave that marshmallowy and slightly inebriated mess to your imaginations.

We also had a birthday… Happy Birthday, Momma!

Besides the insane amount of vacation foods we consumed, there was a lot of this fierce competition…

And this little boy in the ocean…

This one nursing the sunburn of the century…

And the construction and subsequent all-day defense of this sandcastle. Yes, it has a soccer field.

And a hot tub.

I’m really missing this view behind the house…

And having my mom and sisters around for the best company while we all clean up the mess that comes from feeding 11 people.

I did miss this blog, though! To all the readers at Sugar Dish Me, I sincerely apologize for spending a week in the only house on the East Coast without wireless internet access. I’m sorry.

But I actually wouldn’t change a thing.

Recipes to follow…

  1. Good to have you back Heather! And that was a well-deserved break. Oak Island looks beautiful! Ok I know this sounds corny but I have been obsessed with visiting NC since One Tree Hill. I know. It sounds stupid. As for the menu, I think I am going to pile on some chicken and rice on Doritos real soon! And root beer floats for breakfast are cool. Very cool.

    • Oak Island is gorgeous. More crowded than the last time we were there, but still awesome nonetheless. I never knew One Tree Hill was in NC. Clearly I was not paying attention… but it is a super great place to live!! There are amazing beaches and gorgeous mountains and pretty mild (if not horribly humid at times) temperatures. The cities are growing, there are good universities and lots of trees. We are fortunate for sure. You should visit!! And if you decide to delve into chicken rice Doritoes territory, make sure to put a fresh slice of jalapeno on top.

  3. I’m just getting back from vacation myself and it is not fun!! I am most depressed he week after I get back to “normal life”. You plan for months on end and are so excited….then it is over. *sigh* Mine too was full of junky, yummy food and alcohol at all times of the day. Perfection — sheer perfection. Glad you enjoyed yours as much as I enjoyed mine! When’s the next one planned for? 🙂

    • Coming home from vacation is so sad. The only thing I missed about “normal life” is my own bed… it’s a trade-off. We are counting down till next year!!

  7. So much fun!!! I cannot get over the fact that Chad never had a s’mores before!!! Did he go from baby to man and skip a childhood??? lol I imagine him loving the crap out of it and wishing he had known about it sooner haha And what is that three marshmallows on a stick? You guys don’t mess around lol That’s like a s’mores sandwich right there yuuuuuuuuuuuumm!!! I love to burn the heck out my marshmallows and then stick them on…that and I have no patience to slow roast those suckers haha Oh god I want a s’more right now haha

Anyhow your boys look like they had a total blast!! Of course I would too if I was there, that place looks awesome!!! Oh and I love sand castles!! Love that they added a soccer field haha And a soda can hot tub…totally pimp!!!

Happy Birthday to your Momma!!! Hooray!!! That brownie sundae looked killer!!! YUM YUM YUM!!! Is that your Starbucks brownie recipe 😉 lol jk

BTW those little pizza looks amazing…I am definitely having pizza when I go on vacation!! I will make sure I make room for that!!! haha

I’m glad you had an awesome vacation, I want more stories!! Glad you’re back…we were all lost without you haha

    • The boys love to catch their marshmallows on fire! And yes, that is 3 marshmallows per stick you see. They like to just eat the marshmallows so our skewers do double duty. That IS the Starbucks brownie recipe you asked for!! That was a double-duty recipe, too; you asked for ’em and my mom loves chocolate. Momma was the guinea pig. Those suckers disappeared with a quickness. They were AMAZING!!! Definitely make room for pizza on your vacation. That’s dough and sauce from scratch with fresh veggies to top the pizzas. We also had canadian bacon and turkey pepperoni for toppings and jalapenos from my garden… pizza can be healthful if you do it right!! We always make little ones so everyone can have what they want. Vacation was so awesome; so many stories and lots of laughs 🙂

Yes, I will definitely incorporate lots of fresh veggies on my yummy pizzaness!!! haha bring on the pizza!!! I leave on vacation on Friday and I’m back on Monday night. Short vacation but I cannot wait it’s going to be epic!!!

  8. Wow, looks like a really relaxing trip. Coming back to ‘real’ life after vacation always sucks, I’m sorry 😦 Btw, the brownie hot fudge sundae needs to get in my bellay right now.

    • Hey Erin! I am sooo wishing I’d had the foresight to make an extra pan of those brownies to put in the freezer for days like today. Or all days. We had THE BEST time — real life is hard right now for sure.

I’m totally bummed that it doesn’t look like I’m making it to the beach this summer.

  11. Glad you’re back…even more glad that you spent your hols eating tonnes of junk, because I feel hugely less guilty for doing the same now! First question – what’s a smore? (I feel you may kill me for not knowing this…!) That birthday chocolate cake looks AMAZING (you know me and chocolate cake!) and that is definitely the best sandcastle EVER! Looks like you had a fantastic time – here’s to holidays relaxing with friends and family, guilt-free daytime drinking and all day eating and general good times 🙂

    • Oh no you didn’t.

A s’more is like the happiest sandwich on earth. You toast a marshmallow (preferably over an open outdoor flame) and then slap the hot melty marshmallow in between two graham cracker squares with a few pieces of Hershey’s chocolate. It makes the most delicious mess ever. And then you want s’more.

Definitely our best family vacation to date — cheers to guilt free all day drinking and junk food in the best company!

  14. Sounds like a wonderful vacation! Glad you had a great time, Heather 🙂

Those pizzas look like a fun meal to serve a crowd, and so glad Chad is now in the s’more club. Awesome!!

  15. Everything about that trip was amazing. We ate so good all week because of you… and now I’m more motivated to make some good food 🙂 We should probably make S’mores very soon!!

  16. Oh lord, I could eat Smores ALL DAY LONG. There’s something about the melty chocolate and roasted marshmallow favor that is just so right. Yum! And I love that you introduced your honey to them….What a treat! Oh, and I’ve heard the Carolinas are gorgeous, and you just confirmed that for me. So pretty! And don’t you just love the ocean? Anyway, glad to see you back!!

PS, I’ve been absent-ish too, as you read. I will just be happy when my first job ends next week. I need a break and to play some major blogging catch-up!

    • Hey BB! Looking forward to when you have time to catch up 🙂 I need a vacation after my vacation… perhaps I should indulge in one of your sugar scrubs? It is really beautiful here; we are very lucky. My sister actually has all the really pretty photos– mine are a direct result of drinking too much and getting sand in my camera’s shutter. It was a really great week, though! One of the best!
