moist, chewy chocolate chip cookies

Do you want to eat this cookie?

I do.

IN FACT, I would eat this entire plate full of cookies right now if three cookie monsters who will remain nameless (ahem… you know who you are.) hadn’t beat me to it. They even demolished my secret ziploc freezer bag stash that was cleverly stuffed behind two loaves of bread and a roll of parchment paper. Apparrently I’m just going to have to be a bit more clever. Game on.

These were first day of school/after school snack cookies. For some reason, school turns the cookie monsters into the hungriest small people to ever roam the earth. They come through the door like ravenous little dinosaurs and if there isn’t a snack waiting they will rummage through the cabinets and devour all the cereal, raisins, and pretzels. Then they move on to the fridge and start putting dents in all the apples, yogurt, and cheese.

I draw the line at cheese. Don’t even think about it.

sticky batter & chocolate chips
My executive decision was to start this school year off right. Tee-totally prepared with a platter full of these big fat chewy chocolate chip cookies, and more for lunches later this week. And some more for Mommy’s secret chocolate chip cookie stash because sometimes she needs a little pick-me-up and almonds just don’t cut it (Dear Food Editors at All Women’s Magazines: please stop pretending like almonds and kale are going to satisfy all of our needs. Have you ever even had a cookie?!).

The little boys were thrilled to pieces with their chocolate chip cookies. And I didn’t even mind when they each traipsed past the plate six more times to “discreetly” snatch extra cookies while we sorted through giant stacks of school papers to be signed and they cranked out spelling homework. I wear the Irresistable Cookie-Maker Badge with pride. I gave the go-ahead after dinner when the plate of cookies started calling to them, because sometimes food talks to me, too.
baking chocolate chip cookies
I’m pretty sure I had a whole entire conversation with this cookie dough.

deliciously chocolatey chewy chip cookies
This batch of cookies DID survive Monday night. I managed to pack them away in little boy lunches and wrap a few for Chad to take to work. I had one before lunch.

Maybe it was two.

And after that … it’s a mystery (albeit not a very difficult one).

I suppose I should blame the author of this recipe for my cookies’ disappearing act. They were titled “The Best Big Fat Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies”. And indeed, they were.

Still, though… someone around here owes me a cookie. Or 12.

The Best Big Fat Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies (modified from

2 cups all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup packed light brown sugar

1/2 cup white sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla

1 egg, plus 1 yolk

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

To Make

Pre-heat the oven to 325. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl whisk together the melted butter and sugars until combined. Mix in the vanilla, egg and extra yolk. Stir in the flour mixture until just combined. Then stir in the chocolate chips.

Drop by the heaping tablespoonful onto the prepared cookie sheet.

Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are a pretty golden toasty brown. Cool the cookies for a few minutes on the cookie sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

  2. First off I love that you are blogging more!!! Secondly, when the image of fresh baked chocolate chip cookie appeared on my browser..I instantly drooled a little lol YUMMO!!! Those look so good, I seriously would have walked past that plate more than 6 times haha I could have eaten the entire batch!!! lol EASILY!!! The cookie dough in the bowl is by far the best looking cookie dough in the world…it doesn’t get much better than chocolate chip!!! You gotta stash those suckers in the bag marked brussel sprouts…then they won’t touch them!!! Besides, kids will remove everything looking for the good stuff haha I would have torn down your house if I thought more cookies existed!!! I’m a total cookie monster!!! I love that pic with the inside of the cookie…omg I can smell it I swear it!!! hahaha

    • Thanks! Unfortunately, the brussels sprouts bag would only fend off two of the three monsters. Chad is all over a brussels sprout. I agree, though… you really can’t beat plain old chocolate chip cookies. I really liked this recipe. Less butter, more chocolate. Every batch came out same as the one before it and I didn’t have to bust out the hand mixer cause it called for melted butter. It was great! I might make more and hide them from everyone. The only problem with that is that after a couple I need to hide them from myself!

    • I saved this recipe seriously like 3 years ago, but whenever I make chocolate chip cookies I stick with the same old standby. This recipe lives up to the hype, though. It’s really really good. Thanks to the author, Elizabeth, whoever she may be!

  5. I just wanna dive right into that bowl of cookie dough! I’m a total cookie lover…hence my blog name of course! They look like my perfect cookie…thick and chewy 🙂 I must try this recipe for my little cookie monsters! 😉

  6. Oh, yum. What a great first day of school treat! I love thick chocolate chip cookies and will need to try this recipe. I mean, I love kale and I love almonds, but when my cookie tummy is talking, it talks LOUD. And right now it is saying it wants those cookies! Good thing I can tell it they are already loooooong gone 🙂

    • Haha. They are looooong gone. I love me some kale and almonds, too. But when I think of those clever little “eat this not that” articles, it doesn’t matter what they put up against the chocolate chip cookie. I’m picking that every single time. Kale Vs. Cookie = no contest.

    • That was soooo much better than the original. That song makes me wanna poke Carly Rae Jepsen in the eye every time I hear it. It’s like a reflex. I can’t help it.
I do love me some Cookie Monster, though. “C’ is for Cookie is good enough for me; A puppet right after my own heart.

  8. “(Dear Food Editors at All Women’s Magazines: please stop pretending like almonds and kale are going to satisfy all of our needs. Have you ever even had a cookie?!).” – hahahahaha! I wish I’d had these cookies waiting for me after school this week. Three days back. Still no kids. Super stressed already. I’m pretty sure the sultanas that are sitting in my cupboard where biscuits used to be are not going to last very long before they turn back into biscuits!!

    • Back-to-school = cookies. Plain and simple. It’ll be great!
I wish I had these cookies waiting for me after school this week, too! Too bad they didn’t last that long!

  9. I bet your boys were thrilled to see these in their lunch boxes. I know mine would be! Oh, and you make me laugh (out loud) when I read your posts. I can’t say every blogger does that, but you do and you do it well, my friend.

Headed out to the baseball field in 92degree weather to watch about 5 hours of baseball games this afternoon/evening. I have got to get me a secret cookie stash. I’m pretty sure after 5 hours, I deserve some alone time with a stack of cookies!

    • Hey, Allison! Glad I can be good for a laugh 🙂 Errr… rather I’m glad you can appreciate my at times extreme sarcasm would probably be more accurate. I do not envy any kind of baseball field in this heat. Ohhhhh no. It has been straight miserable outside these past few days. I think you do deserve a gimantico stack of cookies! And iced coffee spiked with Bailey’s.
